San Francisco Depression Therapy for Men
If you're a guy who's been grinding through life feeling like something's just... off, you're not alone. Maybe you're successful on paper but feel empty inside. Maybe you're exhausted from fighting that harsh inner critic, or you've lost interest in things that used to matter. As a seasoned clinical psychologist, I help men in the Bay Area understand what's actually happening beneath the surface and make real changes—not just manage symptoms.

What sets my practice apart from other San Francisco depression counseling providers
Not all therapists are created equal, especially when it comes to working with men. Here's what makes my approach different:
27 years of experience working specifically with men, with roughly 30,000 sessions completed.
Accelerated approach that combines thinking, emotions, body work, and relationship patterns to help you get results fast.
Real talk, no BS—I interact with you like a real person, not someone taking passive notes while you "explore” with no clear direction.
I've done the work myself—extensive personal therapy and specialized training—so I get what it's like from the inside.
Guys in tech appreciate my unusual balance between science and intuition.
Excellent track record—clients say my approach is more interactive, directed, and faster than other therapists they've worked with

Common signs of depression
You're constantly irritable or angry rather than sad—snapping at people, frustrated by everything.
Work has become a grind where you're just going through the motions, even if you're still performing at your job.
You've lost interest in hobbies, sex, hanging out with friends—things just feel flat.
You're exhausted all the time, no matter how much you sleep, or you can't sleep at all.
That inner critic won't stop—constant self-judgment, feeling like you're never good enough.
You're numbing out with alcohol, weed, porn, gaming, or overworking to avoid feeling anything.
Relationships feel like too much effort—withdrawing from your partner, friends, or family.
You feel stuck in your life with no clear path forward, like you're just treading water.
What to expect from the therapy process
Step 1. We start with a free intro meeting
This is a low-pressure conversation where we get to know each other and you can tell me what's going on. I'll ask about what you're dealing with to make sure that I can help, and you can get a feel for whether we click.
Step 2. We identify what's actually going on
In the first few sessions, we work together to pinpoint the real internal problems—not just the surface symptoms. Most guys have no idea how their minds actually work or what early patterns are creating current suffering. That's our first order of business.
Step 3. We do the work to get you unstuck
Whether it's rewiring negative thought patterns, processing buried emotions, releasing trauma held in your body, or fixing dysfunctional relationship dynamics—I bring whatever tools are needed. We meet weekly or biweekly, and I'll be more active and directive than most therapists.
Step 4. You phase out and maintain progress
Once the major work is done, guys typically start meeting once a month, then taper off completely. You'll always be welcome to check back in for a tune-up or just to run something by me when life throws you a curveball.

If you're reading this page, you probably already know something's off. The fact that you're researching help is a sign. You don't need to be in crisis or have a formal diagnosis—if you're stuck, anxious, irritable, numb, or just feeling like you're not living up to your potential, therapy can help you figure out what's underneath all that.

There's not just one best type of therapy for depression. I would know—I've studied everything from cognitive behavioral to somatic work to psychoanalytic approaches. The truth is, different guys need different things depending on whether they're stuck in their thinking, their emotions, their body, or their relationships. I bring an integrated approach so we can use whatever works for you.

Therapy helps by getting to the root of why you're depressed—not just treating symptoms. We'll identify the "outdated operating system" from your early life that's creating problems now, process the emotions you've been avoiding, and give you practical tools to handle stress, relationships, and that harsh inner critic. Guys often say they feel more like themselves again after therapy.

For many men, yes—therapy alone can be incredibly effective, especially when we address the underlying causes. That said, I'm not anti-medication if it's genuinely helpful. Some guys benefit from a combination approach with their psychiatrist. We'll figure out what makes sense for you, and I'll be direct with you about what I think will work.

Yes, depression therapy is often covered by insurance, though I operate on a full-fee basis and don't take insurance directly. However, many clients submit their receipts to their insurance for out-of-network reimbursement. I can provide you with superbills to submit to your insurance company. My focus is on providing high-quality, accelerated therapy rather than being limited by insurance company constraints.
